Is your family a set of TV nuts? My husband is so adamant about TV programming that he will cut back on groceries just to ensure the Dish bill is paid. For TV? I don’t get it! I can live with it or without it. Food’s another thing, though.
Nonetheless, a life without TV at my house means a headache, listening to everyone else whine about TV. I made them go without Dish for 2 months last summer. We spent lots of time together; it was nice. However, TV seems to be an outlet for everyone else in my family to wind down in the evenings.
Every month as I paid $120 for Dish, I cringed. What on earth am I doing???? Being a Pinterest addict, I am always looking for ways to save money. One evening, while everyone else was drowning in their beloved Dish, I found multiple Pinterest pins about cutting the cable. Hmmm… I thought, what on earth does that mean? Then I saw I could pay fractions of what I was currently paying.
Over the next month, I researched these ideas: Sling TV, HULU, Netflix, and the like. Finally, one day I received the following in the mail from DISH:
This nice little account change was a monthly price increase of $5. Over the course of the year, this adds up to $60, a couple of tanks of gas. I said, “This is it! We are done with Dish.” I got everything ready and changed over to Sling TV and Netflix. I now pay half of what I was paying for Dish and have all that we want.
Netflix–$12 per month
Sling TV–$40 per month
Roku Express–$29 purchase from Amazon.com
You cannot beat this deal! The key is that each of these services relies on internet service, so you must ensure you have a great internet service. We have a local internet company that has amazing service—Paladin Wireless. If you live in my area, you are in luck! Just tell them I referred you. Maybe they will give me a deal.
This approximately $70 savings per month pays for our home internet and my OnStar subscription for my car, money well spent!
Another great movie online streaming program is Amazon Prime.
The amazing thing with Amazon Prime is they let you try it out for free for 30 days and even includes free speedy shipping on items you order through amazon.com. You can’t beat that!
It’s easy to settle for cable or satellite TV. Sometimes if you want to save money, you have to think outside the box and do something a little out of the ordinary. You will be amazed how easy it is to get used to the change….even for a woman who is not crazy about TV.
Best of luck in saving money!
